Herodotean Lives - Prof Thomas Harrison Postgate Lecture

In this lecture, Prof Thomas Harrison looks at the lives and careers of some prominent readers of Herodotus from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and how their concern with Herodotus intersected with their wider lives, and the times in which they wrote.

The lecture will focus in particular on two, sharply contrasting, figures: the folklorist Andrew Lang and the notorious scholar and politician Enoch Powell.

What do these and other writers take from Herodotus (and what should we take) about the nature of history-writing?

And what parallels did they draw between his age and their own?

The lecture will be followed by a free buffet and drinks
